Researchers: Social Media Influencing Teens To Adopt Mental Illness Identities

Doesn’t surprise me.

I mean, if there is anything more self-absorbed than a teenager, especially a teenage girl, I don’t know what it is.  If I could only have explained my bad attitude by saying I was suffering from some syndrome, I’d have sure done it!  “It’s not my fault I didn’t come home on time (do my homework or chores, talked back) – I’m suffering from blah-blah syndrome!

“Researchers have examined the troubling trend of teens self-diagnosing mental illness through social media.

A new paper published earlier this month in Comprehensive Psychiatry proposed that “social contagion” through prolonged social media use can explain why some teens, mostly adolescent females, self-diagnose their purported rare mental illnesses and personality disorders online.”
